| I think the major deconstruct is finished! All suspension is out, and relevant parts are currently at the soda blasters. What a PITA the "captive" nuts are on the top wishbones when they break free! Eventually dealt with but took hours each.So far everything is a whole lot better than I thought it might be. Each inner wing has taken about 3 hours to scrape the underseal with heat gun and scrapers. I truly believe that the underseal has created a whole lot more problems than it solved. Rear axle is out, only one of the handbrake cables gave me some headaches, and it's now freeing up nicely. The centre bush needs replacing, so the shopping list is growing! I do plan on replacing both /all flexible hoses. Rear wings are currently the subject of navel searching, fibreglass, or repair the steel ones? All 4 shocks(dampers) are good So far the shopping list; Competition springs All bump stops Alloy rear spring platforms Harnesses Racetech seats Jetex exhaust Weber carb ? Wheels. Front round light panel. (I'm going to be in Seattle in a few weeks so am arranging to meet up with other Saab Nutters I hope!)
I know, it's all lies without photos but, ...

| Hi Rhys, I am following this with interest.
Have you removed the front springs yet ? If so, what tools did you use ? Thanks

| As I have done a lot of springs, I knew the major issue was to make sure all claws engaged, and as close to the ends as I could, so I spent time making sure that was the case. Obviously both used, and as close to 180 degree separation as I could Once they were compressed to coil bound. I had almost an inch of room to take them out, more than I had been lead to believe. Was it wise? Certainly wasn't dangerous in any way, but the genuine thing would be easier, if I knew where one was! Anyone that can lend/hire me a set for putting springs back in? | |

| Hi Rhys,
I tried the compressors with four hooks but they did not fully engage as the radius of the springs was different to the radius of the hooks.
It all got a bit dodgy so I backed off.
There is a thread over on the UKSaabs forum re.Spring Compressors.
See "Saab Garage, Classic Saabs ( including workshop), Spring Compressors..
99 EMS who is based in Cheshire has all of the proper Saab tools for this job and he has kindly offered the use of these tools to anyone nearby. I don't know if you are nearby. He does required pick up and a deposit. Might be worth a try. Cheers James

| Thanks James, I'm Midlands, so theoretically everywhere is close (compared to NZ definitely). made very sure all hooks had engaged. Perhaps there are different versions of the SP ones? Anyhow, I will follow up on your suggestion. | |

| Suggestions please! I now (well by the end of the weekend) should have all the underseal/tar stuff off the wings, and taken back to sound metal where the original paint surface has deteriorated, and ready to put in the replacement panels where needed. The advice I'm seeking is what to put on where it all came from. This is not to be judged as a show car, but I would like that it lives for a similar period again before someone needs to attack it.

| On any welded seams under the car I have used a seam sealer. Then two coats of hammerite over all of the panel, followed by some spray on stone chip. This was only done recently so I can't comment on the longevity of this method. I plan to follow it up some Dinitrol waxy under body sealer. | |

| I now have all the front suspension back from the sandblaster, looks great. I have been told by son the engineer at JLR Classic to search out Key-Phos as a coating.I'm visiting them today. It's supposed to be a great coating, doesn't chip, can be crack tested through and moisture can't get behind as it can with powder coat. Sounds expensive already! Rear suspension is now all in the back of the car ready to take for blasting. Patch panels are mostly made ready to weld in. Rear fibreglass wings are in hand, so I now have options, repair the steel ones and use them, sell them as is (they need repairs but not too bad) or use the glass ones and stache the steel ones for the future. That shopping list is going to have to be actioned very soon, bye bye bank balance! | |

| Weekend, and Monday report! As any who have done it, removing the tarlike crap from the wings is tedious, depressing and whole lot of other words, however, I have finished all inner wings. Method was hot air gun and scraper, white spirits and a complete roll of blue roll and 4 old tee shirts. Today I attacked the inside of the front RH wing, inside and out and scraped all the tarcrap, and paint off, sanded wet and dry, a bit of reshaping and it's currently clamped on while I figure the patch panel for the light cut out. Left side one I started on, then gave up when SWMBO arrived home from work. I'm now waiting for the Jetex to arrive (misquoted by supplier), Steve at Malbrad is sending stuff, next round of sandblasting and coating imminent pick up! We should be back on wheels soon. Has anyone 1 only good bumpstop? the ones that go inside springs? Steve has not enough! I'll be looking to find soccerballs in Seattle if nothing else works before I leave next Wednesday. I know, I still can't post pics! Luddite. | |

| If I don't do, buy, or make at least one thing a day it will sit forever. Even something as small as the price of a coffee makes progress. | |
