Now beginning to wish I'd had a go at doing this myself! 2 weeks in and the Classic car Restorers are still "...trying to source parts - but we are very much on it". Doesn't inspire me with confidence which is a shame as I had primed them up with potential work on another project. Oh how I hate relying on other people- should have been a 5 min job!!!

Any development on this Geoff? You seem to have this type of distributor which has the removable plate.
Have you checked for a break in earth contact continuity by manually operating the vacuum advance?
I assume the vacuum advance is still hooked up to the carburettor?
I had a similar break in power which killed all the electrics years ago, causing me to come to a halt
in Theatre Square, Nottingham and had to push the car off the road onto the pavement to investigate.
The culprit was the main power lead to ignition switch had come off and needed the spade squeezing with pliers.

Still waiting Woody they asked me to call back after Weds next week. The dizzy is the same as yours but its the earth wire from the adv/retard plate to the side of the dizzy body (just tucked under the rotor arm on your pic) which has frayed through. The leads from the coil are all ok. As I said in my last post wish I had bought myself a bigger soldering iron and done it myself now. Never thought a Classic Car specialist would take so long to do a simple job!

Update - rang them again today, almost 3 weeks since I dropped it off and he said that he was trying to get hold of a new baseplate as it was spot welded on and couldn't be repaired. So finally lost patience and went and retrieved it so I'm now back where I was 3 weeks ago. No way am I paying for a new distributor for the sake of a piece of wire!

Might try Joe's technique and see if that cures the ignition cut outs. Got the TF to get through an mot first as the brakes need replacing - again, just doesn't get enough use!

Depending on where the braid is frayed through you might be able to just solder the two parts together again. Clean well with brake cleaner to degrease it before you do it.

Anybody know how much the vacuum adv/retard moves - can't be more than a few degrees can it? Mine is very stiff anyway so can only move it by about 5 degs. If it's that stiff I can't see ordinary insulated wire impeding it further.

I just found a base plate you can have if any use, I'm not 100% it's the right type. If you email me your phone number I can send you some pics.

Hello Geoff,

This company maybe able to assist with parts / advice etc. I have used them a few times and have been successful with other classic cars.

Latest news is that the distributor is back in set to the marks before it came out so in theory the timing should be the same. The engine is running OK but not pulling as before so either the timing is out or the adv/retard mechanisim is not working as it should. So when I get more time I'll check timing and get the strobe working to see what the adv is like when changing engine revs. The cut out problem wasn't apparent on my short test run but towards the end I was loosing power so not sure what is happening. Unfortunately it's not so easy to see the timing marks on a Sonett III as it is with a 96! Got to do the TF brakes first so will report back later.

That all sounds very frustrating, but I would definitely give the ignition switch a clean. It was genuinely one of the easier jobs I’ve done on that car. Servisol switch cleaner was what I used- it’s an excellent product!
Good luck...

Thanks Joe, I'll certainly try that. May be a couple of weeks before I can get back to it but will report back when done.
