Only as far as the check strap if you still have them in place otherwise put some wood blocks under the drums.

Thanks Woody, muppet question, my expertise of 96's holds no bounds LOL . Yes having looked at it properly the check strap will sort it and for some doughnut moment there I was thinking I would be undoing the spring not the shock... Been a long day!!

"Beardy" I am afraid I have no experience of spraying body panels but have often wondered what horrors would be going on from the time of getting them back to bare metal to the time they are sprayed. It,s no wonder why you see so many panels come back through with rust especially when people have taken them back to bare metal them put a water based filler or porous primer on them especially during the winter in a damp environment.

With regards to "underseal"the Dinitrol process on the previous page details the process and product names and codes required. The Protect Super 447 is overpainteable BUT it would not be practical or cost effective to do the whole of the underside. If it,s for road use you shouldn't,t need it for the majority of the underside, Underbody Wax 4941 will protect it well enough and can be topped up later on. Stone chip can be applied in areas of the wheel arches. I wouldn,t use it in the engine bay either, could look a mess even if overpainted... BilT Hamber very good also but more expensive and very similar.

Covering up everything in thick hard gunk is a psychological positive to protect BUT chances are it will have to come off again at some point and that will be a hell of a job plus you want to keep an eye on what is happening underneath. It,s all great from new or if done really well but if compromised it just traps water and is worse than if it was on before... If you definitely have good metal, POR-15 original is a good option, tough as nails but it won,t come off again. I am not talking about the ordinary POR-15 black chassis paint (they have many products under POR-15) but the original stuff, once on it is good for life... It 's for that reason I wouldn,t paint it over seams especially the sill seals as they can rot from the inside out, you would never know what was happening underneath until it was too late, same applies to plastering it in a thick underseal.

I am doing a belt and braces job on mine, back to bare metal as much as poss
Converust 900
Corroheat 4010 (to absolutely ensure no moisture can get through)
Cavity wax 3125 (light coating as recommended to ensure adhesion of next coating)
Underbody Wax 4941 or Stone Chip Protect Super 447 for high abrasion areas only.
This is all very thin but effective...

Most do Converust 900 where needed then Underbody Wax 4941 which is OK if the surface is clean and a lot cheaper, ,maybe £100, my method will be over twice that Corroheat ain't cheap, the Converust is £15 a tin BUT it does the job.

I don't want to use anything like waxoil. I'm having enough trouble removing the stuff already on the car.

The etch primer is rust inhibiting and doesn't appear to be absorbing water.

Can the stonechip be applied to the primer and then over painted? If so then I'll use that on the arches and underbody.

Yes Dinitrol is epoxy based (unlike Waxoyl which is a fairly useless in comparison oil, white spirit, wax mix) so it should go on OK but you can always put on a light coating of cavity wax 3125 which is what Dintrol recommend.

For the underside I would not do this however, any rust needs treating properly first, you cannot guarantee ground back metal will be good enough in areas of seams, welds etc, primers are usually porous by their nature and I wouldn,t like to guarantee stone chip would not let moisture through. See my additional notes on previous post! Dinitrol is not like Waxoylbut it sounds like painting maybe a better option for you.

"Beardy" one test to know what you are dealing with is to try some rust convertor on a small area. It will turn purple/black on the bits that need treatment and remain shiny metal on the ok bits...

Apologies if I have put my foot in it with your project and what you have done, I don,t know who a few folks are on here as some have got different from names .e.g Stig, Redders and some others...

Main thing is not to cover any seams especially areas like the sills with hard POR-15 or thick underseal as they can rot from the inside out and you wouldn,t see the daamge being done underneath!

No movement on my 96 apart from every time I put it on the lift it has to come off again for someone else's car. I have the Carcass of a Toyota Supra going on this week and five Defenders for anti-rust treatment.

Can't complain and I am saving up slowly to get her back on the road in a scruffy state for the spring

A few of you will recognise this guy! My ole man finally visited and saw the 96 for the first time and proceeded to extol the virtues of a 96

He still has a SAAB as does my sister...

Note that you have one of those Machine Mart car tents.
They're brill. No planning permission needed!!!!
I've got mine heated, and I'm planning an insulated floor for the winter.

Finally my lift is free, so I have spent half the day preparing the underside on Christmas Eve

Having used clear Dinitrol Corroheat on a couple of mint motors I am going to do the same with mine. It's too nice to cover up... One more day under it and it should be ready for spraying :D I will sneak out to the garage on Xmas day and spray on Boxing Day hopefully.

Last request if anyone knows someone who can refurb my SAAB Sport & Rally wheel before I buy a new Moto Lita one and wreck it by hopefully swapping over the leather and sending the Moto Lita one back to them for new leather as they only refurb their own wheels.

Also I have had a Sport wheel before, the correct flat type (not 99 dished type!) but it kept catching on the windscreen wiper lever. Anyone had the same problem with a SAAB or Moto Lita wheel?

OK you cannot swap the leather over from one wheel to another so I have ordered a Moto Lita wheel for the interim until I get my leather refurbed and stitched back on the original SAAB wheel.

After all that, not an easy, very clear sales women to deal with!! I actually like the original SAAB padded wheel so why I have ordered a Moto Lita one now I don,t know
.

I'll order some spotlights and side stripes now to go with the alloys and steering wheel that will never get fitted to the car
