This is great info thanks guys, I'm thinking I'm going to get mine welded/repaired.

I think if I buy a new one I'll be sleeping in my car (and I don't have the bed conversion kit....)

The last wing came off yesterday now I have a new fuel hose. Worth checking as it was just beginning to rot in the corner, you can see the little inside lip In the corner has been eaten away a bit (now curved) but fortunately not the actual main structure and it can be stopped.

I am sending them the wheel to give me a final quote. £95 for the leather grip so far which is good as another quote was £125. Really pleased they can do it, I expect it will be around the £200-250 mark and more for their new horn push gubbins etc If it fits which would be even better.
Will keep you posted on cost if anyone needs/wants theirs refurbed.

Looks like the one in my car - which could also use a refurb, so keep me posted!

When I got my car, it was missing the horn push, but they supplied me with a replacement at reasonable cost (Don't ask me how much! It was over 8 years ago now!) It fitted straight in, and has been fine ever since.

Will do Pete, good to hear the horn push fits. It should do of course but nice to get confirmation. One of my clients put a new Mota Lita in the same style on his Defender (I know, I know) and it was identical to the SAAB wheel as far as I could see.

Mota Lita have asked me to say for any interested parties that a new SAAB wheel would not be the standard price as it would be a special!! I.e. It has the SAAB stamp on it and red stitching. They did not give a price but a standard one without SAABness is £142 + VAT without boss etc. With the boss included without SAABness it is £264 including carriage, so. Ithink you would be looking at around £325 - 350 for a new SAAB one. I am pretty sure the horn push SAAB logo is different to the originals also.

If you have an old SAAB one to refurb the wheel metal to refurb is £100 + VAT which is to take off the hard padding or whatever it is that shapes the grip, strip the metal repaint/powder coat, and put on new grip padding. New leather with red stitching is £95 + VAT. I have also ordered a new boss, horn push, ring and fasteners...

Edit, 20 mins later after writing the above this original one has just arrived (many thanks Thrummer, that was quick!). I couldn,t resist it. I can now decide which one to hang on my wall and which one to put on the 96. It will be interesting to compare this one with the refurbed one when it arrives in a couple of weeks from Mota Lita.

Got her back up on the lift and have finally done the jacking points, sills and rear section under the boot. To conclude that is original underseal off, rubbed back any surface rust with emery cloth, treated with Dinitrol Converust, then three coats of Dinitrol Corroheat which will harden and not remain tacky like other products collecting all the road grime, it also stays clear so you san keep an eye on things. I bought a rattle can of grey paint but prefer to keep it looking like this, there is very little rust and having patches of non matching grey around the jacking points would look worse I think. It's not a show car and it is better to keep things clear and visible!

She was well looked after thankfully, even had a couple of Waxoyl treatments just at the right time as recommended by SAAB and was always wiped down before being put in the garage according to her previous owner. Rot wise (or lack of it) she is probably the best I have had, a properly warm garage made a big difference also.

Wish I had a warm garage, I am hoping to punch a small hole from our lounge into the garage and put a radiator in there and insulate the roof properly also. It will just help keep the damp out, similar to the conservatory.

yes the damp gave me many sleepless nights about what to do with it when I was going to have my 71 finished, looked at the CarCoon systems and all those competitors, but didn't want to get one until we'd emigrated due to voltage differences

What I've learned since emigrating is the winters here are so dry we have to actually humidify the house, so my garage is as dry as a bone - heating it to work on the SAAB when it's -20ºC outside is another issue!!

Well you will have more foresight than me I'm sure. Stupidly I bought one of those gas fan heaters, it works ok in my outside temporary garage tent set up but in a double garage the fumes get to you after 20 mins so it is next to useless. I should have paid £200 more and got a diesel fired fan heater. Gas is also liquid as you know so I am just chucking out more moisture

Now pretty clean after one steam clean. I used the non environmentally stuff on the left called CD2 (had it for years, good stuff) but will use Marine Clean for another couple of goings over...
