painted the whole thing black and wet flatted the paint until the letters came back through as bare metal, then clear coated the whole thing to stop the bare metal rusting

Not sure I'd trust the clear coat in the long term to keep the rust at bay, just needs a knock to break through it. It'd be more paint and more time, but primer then a good coat of white before the black would be my choice if trying that method. Probably wouldn't need the clear coat if done carefully.
Currently it does look go though, I have to admit.

still waiting for the damn Canadian weather to buck up here (2 day ice storm), so thought I'd start pulling all the parts I've been collecting for a retrofit headlight wiper system. Testing it on a spare front panel before I fit it to the car...

I'm sure the plastic ones were introduced way before MY76, possibly MY71 or 72?. Earlier FoMoCos and twin barrel Solexes (MY77>)had metal filter housings. I think early single Solexes had a small metal filter housing. Check the parts book: http://www.saabv4.com/index.php/saab-factory-manuals/saab-factory-parts-list/
