The petrol gauge on my 1976 Saab has never worked and I have been told it is because of a broken petrol sender in the petrol tank. I would like to buy a replacement but have not been able to source it.
I'm told VDO 226-162 is the correct replacement - I ordered the wrong one based on the ohm's numbers stamped on the sender base-plate (turns out they aren't the ohms values after all)
Search the forum, there is a post about it where a member had his tested for resistance, VDO226-162 runs around $35US
Good to have the VDO replacement part number, although a quick Google has failed to reveal any UK stockists.
I had my sender repaired by Speedy Cables (London) Ltd, who despite the name are based in Swansea ! Not cheap (about £35 a few years ago), but a very sound repair and good service (see http://www.speedycables.com/repairs.html )
