Hi all

I noticed today that the cream main power cable to the top of the fusebox was very hot with the engine running. Looks like the wire going into the spade connector is corroded and probably a bad connection. I am hoping I can chop it off and leave enough wire to attach a new spade connector (I hope the wire is OK) but the cheapo connectors I seem to find now are rubbish. Has anyone got a source of good ones and I could put black heatshrink on to make it look correct.

I had exactly the same problem with the heavy cable that you refer to. The one that goes from the alternator to the "always live" connection on the top of the fuse box.
I once had smoke coming from the connection, very scary when bombing down the motorway, and suddenly you can smell smoke.
The problem in my case was not the connector on the end of the cable, but the riveted connection on the underside of the fuse box, which had come slack.
To prevent any future problems, I went the whole hog and got completely rid of the old continental fuse box, and replaced it with 3 modern blade fuse boxes. I also ran a new cable from the alternator up to the fuse box. The old cable was heavily oxidised inside.
I know the purists will hold their hands up in horror, but the safety of the car is more important to me.
As for your question, (sorry for the long rambling story...), I just buy boxes of connectors at Halfords, or Auto-jumbles at classic car shows.

Hi,
Take a loo at the Auto Sparks website, they make looms and are always very helpful,

Cheers,

What Barry said

I had my whole loom redone by AutoSparks. Quality is excellent and an exact replica of the original (plastic sheathing is identical as are all the connectors) Great to deal with and have a section of "components" on their website so you can order "a la carte"

If you keep the old fuse box, check that the riveted connections on the underside of the fuse box are tight.

The heavy cable going from the alternator to the top of the fuse box is 4 mm square according to my wiring diagram. On the Auto sparks web site 4.5 mm square is rated at 35 amps.

Yes, 4 mm2, as indicated in the wiring diagram.

I had the same problem and soldered the rivets to the connecting strip on the underside of the fuse box.

If my schoolboy arithmetic serves me well, 4mm2, equated to 2.2mm diameter.......
