Further to my purchase of Dennis a 1966 2T Longnose (MYM 999 D) pictured below,I have started the intrusive investigations.
My first question is to Alec - would it be possible for me to include it as a Project on these pages please . I'm sure it was only because he was premature, an accident of birth, and would otherwise have become a V4

My favourite looking 96 and the right colour - it gets my vote to see more!!

Thank you Alec for allowing me to post the project on the V4 Forum.

Well I've started and the following photos show what I will be facing.
I think i will have to improve my welding and fabrication skills dramatically.


O/S F inner wing above spring support.

The same now cut out. Actual spring support doesn't look too bad still galvanised in places.No wax-oil or anything in there.
Then there is the floor/footwells but I don't seem to have any photos. I'll take some for next post. but just to give you a feel for it here are some random ones of bulkhead and inner wings, sills, valances and all the usuals.

From inside boot on o/s.
In the distant past, as was the custom, someone was a dab hand with filler and zinc gauze.The Henry Moore of plastic padding, but didn't leave any holes.
When it was first done I bet it looked brilliant.

Two Stroke looks great - to me it is asking for a leather bonnet strap!

I have been released from working on the house and project Dennis is about to lift off as a project.

I have just purchased a scissor lift to assist, always wanted one.
Not too much progress yet, just started the strip down.
Front grill off , rad out etc. ready for engine and gearbox removal next week.

I like your scissor lift. Been thinking of getting one myself. Does it lift high enough to get the nose or boot of another 96 underneath?
I ask this because my garage is not quite long enough for 3 96's and if I could get one car slightly under the suspended one I think I could get all 3 under cover.

Hi Roger,
That is a terrible bodge on the headlights but I have to confess mine on the 96 are held in with cable ties... Hopefully not for much longer!
Look forward to seeing progress on this - if we get to do our annual visit to the North in August I'll see if we can organise dropping in to see how you are getting on.
I notice your car has two horns. My 1967 95 does to. I wonder if all early ones have this arrangement?

Made more progress over last two weeks.
Engine and gearbox rear axle, everything is now stripped, apart from dash and wiring loom.





Started to run out of boxes for storage so had to buy some more!


These boxes are expensive but you get free tins of beer.This was my second order.


Alex I think it would be possible to get a nose/ boot partly underneath the lift when raised to its full height of 1200mm and obviously it's narrow enough to drive over.



Not too god a photo, but both footwells and inner wheel arch of bulkhead have been previously plated, pretty agriculturally and due to leaving old rusted metal in place beneath have started to rust away the "new" plates.







I have cut out the offending area on the nearside.

Lets hope I can do a decent job of fabing up some new sections let alone the welding.


Gareth Yes it would be great to see you if you are up this way later in the summer(Subject to social distancing being lifted.)

This is my second attempt at posting today. I put in about 10 photos and some text, closed the window by mistake and hadn't posted so I am starting again.

I haven't posted for a while but I am trying to progress but I'm working outside so that doesnt help'


Everything stripped down now apart from the loom, which I did label up ,only for the sun to leach out the writing on the masking tape.

I have decided to redo the previous repairs to the bulk head and scuttle/plenum, too much filler and rust discovered.I am going to cut it out in sections and then repair each in turn the full width of the car.

The corner of the scuttle had previously been bashed in, welded a bit and stuffed with filler , but it looked great.








I have cut out other areas already, concentrating on the front corner passenger side.



and started to repair them.










I have started on the scuttle repairs but it still needs to be cut back more to get clear of the rust.At least the inner steel of the A frame looks OK

Hi John,

Pleased that you find my project inspirational.
I’m reasonably knowledgeable on the mechanical stuff albeit comparatively new to 96s

The welding and fabrication took me out of my comfort zone but I am learning.

In truth my own inspiration and confidence to tackle the project comes from the many knowledgeable members of this forum who have passed on their experience and knowledge in their postings.

This is a great forum with extremely helpful members.

Oh and my criteria for it being a successful project will be driving over a speed hump and and the result not looking like shed load from a scrap waggon.
