| This is a good one has anyone replaced the top nylon bush affair on the main gear shaft? Removing the shaft is not too difficult but feeding the shaft through the reverse gear catch system is a nightmare. Just wondered by chance if any one has attempted and been successful and how they did it? I don't think I will get any replies on this one but prove me wrong!! |

| You mean at the top of the steering column? I've never done this, but I know a SAAB man in Edinburgh who might have some ideas.

| Yes at the the top of the steering column unit but it is attached to the gear shift rod top and the gear shift lever. That is the easy bit. The threaded nylon bush was cracked and falling apart so in my attempt to have as near perfect gear change as possible to try and get some gears I thought I would start at the top and work my way down to the gearbox, so to speak. The problem is how to fit the gear shift rod through the RHD reverse catch unit. LHD don't have one. It is not straight forward and the Saab 1967-79 is very confusing as to how to do it. Anyone with an access to to the manual read bottom right page 641-9 under reverse catch RHD. Also page 641-10, bottom left after Reassembly 10..... Right hand drive are equipped..... The RHD reverse catch unit has a long, quite powerful spring which kinks under load. So on attempting to pass the rod through the spring catches on it thus stopping progress! I am attempting to do this with the whole column still in the car. Next plan of attack is remove column and secure in vice. Cut old gear rod about 12" long, woggle it through spring in reverse catch unit, then tap gear shift rod gently through to displace the temporary 12" piece and hey presto! It won't be as easy as that!! So was wondering if and how other people have managed to do it?

| Ratty I always knew it was better having a LHD car!! Much simpler gear change. I'll have a word on the phone with my mate, and perhaps get him to come on here, and give you some pointers.

| Ratty My mate has not done this before, and can only suggest that your idea of using a dummy shaft, through the spring, is a good one. Sorry can't be of more help. Andy
