| Just checking I've got the gearbox mount and washer the right way round...
The mount obvioulsy goes this way round - as it's tapered...
And the washer looks like it fits this way round on the mount...
I then fitted the mount this way round in the engine bay...
And this is the washer placed on the back of the mount...
I thought the bolt went through the bulkhead, but I guess it sits tight against the washer
and it's accessed through the bulkhead.

| Simon,
Many thanks for posting these photos and super timely.
With the engine already removed, I am now removing the g/box - the latter of which has come about because the g/box was not secured, by the PO, using the long through bolt. Hence when the engine was pulled forward slightly, to aid removal, the g/box came with it !!
Your photos are an excellent comparison to what I have or may not have !!
Is your 96 a pre-76 model ?? If so, I guess you do not have the square shaped plate as part of the securing assembly the later models have ?? With the central securing bolt missing on mine, it is most likely that the square shaped plate will also be adrift.
Thanks again and as Woody says - excellent photos.
Regards.
Richard.

| Thanks for letting me know it looks correct - I couldn't find any photos online, or too much info in the workshop manual either.

| Indeed, the WSM does seem to gloss over this part of the set-up which in essence is contrary to its importance.

| The parts book has some reasonably clear images. I've never seen the spacer (69) fitted.

| Thanks Melle,
Looks at though there was a slight modification to the movement limiter, which also shifted "46" from the back of the limiter to the front, as a result of the spacer. The later limiter also appears to have 2x bolt holes provided; could this have been an option for additional strengthening being bolted to the bulkhead ?? My car certainly falls in to the chassis numbers quoted in 9)
On an aside, Melle, the 3/8"UNC x 1-1/2" bolt you flagged fits perfectly - hence I'm glad to know that the thread on the rear casing has not been stripped. Hence, it looks as though who ever fitted the car's g/box previously, forgot to bolt it in situ.
Now, I'm keeping my fingers crossed I can find the specific cupped washer in the box of spares the PO gave me, so that I can secure the g/box properly on refitting !!!!!
Regards.
Richard.

| Hello,
I have at last, secured a gearbox limiter washer at a common-sense price.
Moving on, the U shape bar (item 47) is I am presuming purely there to act as a pressure spreader when the bolt is fully tightened securing the g/box.
Is that likely to be correct and if so, does it actually need to be U shaped ?? I appreciate Saab have designed the set-up in a certain way, but what is the operational difference between the item in the line drawing compared to a piece of appropriate flat bar ??
Many thanks.

| The U-shaped bracket is there to prevent the engine ripping the rear mount apart and launching forward in case of an accident. I doubt 46 and 47 are the correct way around in the top image from the parts book.

| Seems whoever installed the engine and gearbox on the 96 - didn't worry about the washer OR the bolt!
(there was a handy note written on some masking tape that said "install bolt" which was a small clue)
My question is (once I've sourced a washer), how do I reach back there to install the washer!?
The only way I can see - is to take off the brake servo, but any other less drastic ideas would be welcomed!

| I always go in on the other side (under the battery tray on RHD cars), you can just about reach around and push the washer in place and then carefully fit the bolt from inside the car. If you catch the washer with the bolt as you're trying to screw it in, the chances are the washer will fall out and you have to start the process all over again!
I've also used a tiny bit of 3M trim tape to hold the washer in place and stop it falling
swearing also helps....

| Thanks for the tips - I didn't even look under the battery tray - assuming it would be in the way.
Swearing won't be a problem, I seem to swear at my cars quite a bit, my neighbours must wonder why I bother, with so much blue air floating over the fence! | Edited by - UK_Sub on 31 Jan 2022 13:09:08

| I know what you mean, all the scraped knuckles, welding burns and sore backs are all forgotten, the first time someone notices your car on that first test drive round the block! | |
