| I'm hoping you can help me!
Having taken the engine and greabox out to spray the engine bay, everything is back in place and the engine runs etc. BUT I can't get 3rd and 4th gears!?!
I've read the manual (which describes putting the car into 4th gear), but as I can't actually get it into 4th, it's a bit of a struggle. I've tried adjusting the column and taken the car on test drives, but can only get 1st, 2nd and reverse.
I've attached some pictures to show you what it all looks like along with a video showing the moving mechanism (which if I'm honest, looks all over the place).
video... https://youtu.be/blpEqeLLJcQ
Having posted this on the Saab UK forum, I've got some things to investigate, such as the bush in the bulkhead, checking to see if all 4 forward gears can be selected when the rod is disconnected and also the engine position maybe at fault.
But if you have any other thoughts/ideas/solutions, I would be grateful to hear them!
Thanks, Simon

| Looks like he freewheel rod blocks the gear change mechanism.

| Simon Very strange. This problem is almost always to do with the column position, inside the car. If I'm not mistaken, it's usually the case of being able to get either 1st and 2nd, or 3rd or 4th. Not sure exactly where reverse lies in the scheme of things. Are your sure that your getting full movement of the column top to bottom. Something else perhaps stopping it? I'm not sure that I can see the freewheel rod blocking the gearchange, as suggested by 72sonett3, but it's worth checking.
ps Are you going to Saabfest? I'm heading off down south within the hour

| When I took my engine out (though not gearbox) I had the same problem - couldn't get 4th. Solved it by adjusting the gearbox steady bar - can't remember if I tightened or loosened it but it definitely did the job and everything has been fine since. Your situation might be a bit more complicated if you've made other adjustments though...

| Hi Owen,
Not yet - I'm hoping a change to the gear selector will do the trick - the old one had loads of play and the large rubber washer had two cracks in it - which can't of helped.
I unwisely decided to change my steering column, but mucked up the spare one by snapping the adjustment bolt inside the nechanism, making things worse when trying to extract/drill said bolt. I'm currently waiting on a replacement column before I can bolt evrthing back togethr and take the car for another test drive.
Sorry I can't help you with your query - have you had a look at the white plastic freewheel selector to see if it's damaged in any way?

| Small amount of progress but still no 3rd or 4th gear selection!?!
Cleaned up the replacement column and painted it, before putting everything back together.
I can get first gear
and second
Not sure if this is correct - as the rod seems left-of-centre, but I've got nothing to compare it to...
Bit tricky to see what's happening in the engine bay, when you're sitting in the drivers seat - I may see if I can video, to see what's happening when I try and select 3rd/4th.
Obviously let me know if anything in these photos doesn't look right or if you have any ideas...

| If you disconnect that knuckle, do you get free play l/r on the rod where it goes through the firewall? If so, you need to tighten that.
Whenever I get the problem of not engaging 1 and 2 or 3 and 4, it's always been the front to back position of the steering shroud. At the other end of the lever mechanism the adjustment is the l/r position of the engine relative to the chassis.
I'm waiting for better weather to deal with mine. Good luck with yours Simon.

| Hoping I've got it sorted - jacked up one front wheel to run it through the gears and it seemed to work OK - just need to take it on the road for a proper test. | |
