Can anyone give me an explanation for the wire springs which wrap around the universal joints connecting the shift column to the selector on the box. From research it is suggested that they are only there to dampen noise, if so then I can do without on my rally car, but do they serve any other purpose? Any thoughts welcomed.

Chris Calvert kindly sent me this photo, which helps to show how they're fitted...

Has anyone got a photo of them in position?

I was looking for any info on how these springs are fitted, apparently they smooth out the gearshift too.

I think they take up play and wear in the joints.
